eid fitr card 2011

Ramadan Festival: EID FITR IS A DAY OF THANKSGIVING TO ALLAH (SWT)

The day immediately following the end of the holy month of Ramadan is called Eid Fitr. In other words, it falls on the first day of Shawwal Al-Mukarram. It is one of the greatest Islamic festivals.
Eid Fitr is the Day of Thanksgiving to Allah, for giving His servants the opportunity to fast and to worship Him in the month of Ramadan. On this Day, Muslims leave their jobs, wear clean clothes, offer special Eid Prayers, and after prayers go to visit one another and take part in festivities. Small children wear beautiful new clothes, and are very busy enjoying the festival. Their angelic faces beam with joy.
Islam wants that all Muslims, whether rich or poor, should enjoy Eid. It has, therefore, commanded all the well-to-do people to pay the Zakat-e-Fitr. This Zakat-e-Fitr is paid on the very day of Eid Fitr. It consists of 3 kilograms of one's daily food or its equivalent in cash.
The payment of Zakat-e-Fitr is obligatory upon every person who is adult, sane and free at the time of the sunset on the last day of Ramadan, and is also not dependent upon others for means of subsistence. If the person concerned is the head of a family, it is incumbent upon him to pay his own Zakat-e-Fitr as well.
Zakat-e-Fitr is the right of the poor and the needy, and can be spent for those purposes only, for which Zakat, payable on property, is expendable. This includes helping the deserving people and building hospitals, bridges, schools, etc.
Nowadays, Zakat-e-Fitr is paid without any planning, with the result that the deserving people do not derive any suitable benefit from it. It would be better if the Zakat-e-Fitr paid by all the people, is collected in one place and spent after proper planning, so that the condition of a good number of needy persons may improve.

Eid in Muslim Society: Eid Fitr Celebration (Ramadan Celebration)

Eid Fitr is one of the two great Islamic festivals, the other being Eid-ul-Azha. Its importance can be judged from the fact that Almighty Allah Himself ordered the believers to celebrate it. It is celebrated at the end of the month of fasting (Ramadan) and has a special significance for the Muslim society. Holy Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) established the Islamic egalitarian society, free of all kinds of exploitation and corruption, and maintaining the sanctity of this society was made the obligation of the believers in every age. For this purpose, the holy month of fasting (Ramadan) was selected to help prepare believers for this responsibility. In this training, during the specific fasting periods believers are required to refrain from enjoying such things, which are otherwise lawful for them.
The purpose of this exercise is mentioned in the following verse of the Holy Quran: "So that you may learn restraint." (2:183)
Believers happily obey these injunctions to please Almighty Allah. Such an exercise has pleasant effects on the practical life of believers and, in their practical life, helps them refrain from adopting corrupt ways.
Some jurists maintain that Itikaf (Etekaaf) during the last 10 days of the month of Ramadan is also a part of this training. In this worship, the believer confines himself in a mosque for the specified period of time.
The Islamic society, established in the light of the above teachings was a symbol of the greatness of Almighty Allah on this earth. Actually it was a gigantic achievement, which deserved all kinds of rejoicing. That is why Almighty Allah Himself asked the believers to enjoy this occasion, In this respect the Holy Quran says: "Say in the grace of Allah and in His mercy in that they should rejoice." (Chapter Yunus, Verse 58)
The celebration of the festival of Eid Fitr is itself a model of an egalitarian Islamic society, and Holy Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) best explained this model by his personal example. It is reported that he used to wear a special dress to grace the occasion, but it was never a costly one and was always within the reach of everybody. Once Umar brought a costly dress for him requesting him to wear it on Eid days and other ceremonial occasions. Holy Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) immediately returned the dress observing that it did not behave a believer to wear such a costly dress. The result was that all the Companions dressed simply on this occasion and consequently this simplicity became a symbol of the Islamic society.
Today, the provision of shelter, dress and food are enumerated as the three basic human needs, and equality in meeting these needs results in all egalitarian society. Holy Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) already solved the issue of shelter once and for all. He himself lived in a simple house and expected his Companions to follow him in this respect. Once when a wealthy Companion built a palatial building, Holy Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) disliked it to such an extent that he socially boycotted that Companion (Sunnan Abu Daud, vol.4, p. 487). As a result of the Holy Prophet's stern attitude in this respect, none of the Companions ever dared to have an edge over his fellow believers in the matter of construction of buildings. Due to this policy, even the poor in the society were able to have shelter for themselves.
By dressing simply on this happiest occasion of Eid Fitr, Holy Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) solved the issue of the second basic need of the society.
The third basic need of society is food. Today this need has attained such an importance that it results in political change in many developing countries. By taking various steps, Holy Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) ensured that nobody was deprived of this basic need in the Islamic society. But the situation on festivals is usually different. On this day, everybody tries to enjoy special dishes, which normally the poor cannot afford. Holy Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) held this point in view, and he made such an efficient arrangement that not only was good food guaranteed for all the poor of the society on that day, but also some of their other needs were met. He ordered the rich believers to pay a fixed amount of money to the poor on that day or before that day. This is known as "Sadaqa-ul-Fitr (Zakat-e-Fitr)", and its rate varies according to the price of grain.
A huge amount of money can be collected under this system which may be sufficient to meet the needs of the poor on this day, and some of it may be saved to meet their needs in other difficult times.
Nowadays in many localities, (Sadaqa-ul-Fitr) is adjusted against the emoluments of the Imams of the local mosques, and the poor in the Muslim society air deprived of a big chunk of money which may practically convert the present-day Muslim society into an egalitarian society.
It may be mentioned here that the sacred festival of Eid Fitr has been selected by Almighty Allah Himself to guide the believers to establish an egalitarian Islamic society on the face of this earth. The Holy Quran was revealed during the month of Ramadan about which it was marked: "It (the Holy Quran) is better than that which they hoard." (Chapter Yunus, Verse 58)
Hoarding symbolizes a non-egalitarian society, which encourages the hoarding of essential articles. This is done to fleece the needy persons. The Holy Quran was revealed to eliminate this evil in all its details, and the month of Ramadan was selected for this purpose. The successful completion of all the various steps for establishing such an egalitarian society deserves rejoicing.
Nowadays the Muslims with great pomp and show celebrate Eid Fitr, but unfortunately its real spirit is ignored. That is why the present-day Muslim society age, instead of becoming an egalitarian one, has been divided into haves and have-nots. This state of affairs has not only robbed the majority of Muslims of their peace of mind, but has also converted them into the weakest nation of the world. Such a situation demands that steps be taken to celebrate this occasion of Eid Fitr in the same sprit as during the life of Holy Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.).
In this way Muslims will be able to convert their present day society into an Islamic egalitarian one. It will prove beneficial for humanity as it proved so during the early periods of Islam.

Only for Allah

There was a pious man among the Banu Israel who always remained busy in the worship of Allah.  A group of people came to him and told him that a tribe living nearby worshipped a tree. The news upset him, and with an axe on his shoulder he went to cut down that tree.
On the way, Satan met him in the form of an old man and asked him where he was going.  He said he was going to cut a particular tree.  Satan said, “You have nothing to be concerned with this tree, you better mind your worship and do not give it up for the sake of something that does not concern you.” “This is also worship,” retorted the worshipper. Then Satan tried to prevent him from cutting the tree, and there followed a fight between the two, in which the worshipper overpowered the Satan.
Finding himself completely helpless, Satan begged to be excused, and when the worshipper released him, he again said, “Allah has not made the cutting of this tree obligatory on you. You do not lose anything if you do not cut it. If its cutting were necessary, Allah could have got it done through one of his many Prophets.” The worshipper insisted on cutting the tree. There was again a fight between the two and again the worshipper overpowered the Satan.
“Well listen,” said Satan, “I propose a settlement that will be to your advantage.” The worshipper agreed, and Satan said, “You are a poor man, a mere burden on this earth. If you stay away from this act, I will pay you three gold coins everyday. You will daily find them lying under your pillow. By this money you can fulfil your own needs, can oblige your relative, help the needy, and do so many other virtuous things. Cutting the tree will be only one virtue, which will ultimately be of no use because the people will grow another tree.”
This proposal appealed to the worshipper, and he accepted it. He found the money on two successive days, but on the third day there was nothing. He got enraged, picked up his axe and went to cut the tree. Satan as an old man again met him on the way and asked him where he was going. “To cut the tree,” shouted the worshipper. “I will not let you do it,” said Satan. A fight took place between the two again but this time Satan had the upper hand and overpowered the worshipper.
The latter was surprised at his own defeat, and asked the former the cause of his success. Satan replied, “At first, your anger was purely for earning the pleasure of Allah, and therefore Almighty Allah helped you to overpower me, but now it has been partly for the sake of the gold
coins and therefore you lost.”

KENAGAN HOTEL

When we get off the bus, we checked in at the front desk. It was different from what I had imagined before. The hotel was very old and looked uncomfortable. We got the room 302. Our room was on the third floor. Then we carried the bag from the first floor to the third floor through the stair. We are very tired because of our bag was too heavy. We could see that our room was not really large. There was a double bed, wardrobe, table and television. Everything in the room looked old and some were broken. Especially the bath room, there was no doorknob. Although, it was not too comfortable for us but we could stay overnight at Kenagan Hotel happily and become rest from our trip.

TAMAN TAMADUN ISLAM [TTI] ISLAMIC CIVILIZATION PARK

A nice and warm trip with Casual day is the day that I have trip with my classmate to Terengganu. After I notice that we have got one trip to Terengganu, I feel release and happy.  A place where I was impressed the most at Terengganu is Taman Tamadun Islam [TTI].
Taman Tamadun Islam [Islamic Civilization Park] is located in Wan Man Island in Kuala Terengganu, and it is the most significant monument park ever built in this region, featuring 21 great Islamic monuments and mosques from all over the world. Usually people went to TTI to see the monument of Islamic Civilization. When I step my feed at there, I fell like am now in abroad. Before I enter at that place, I have to check passport to enter. We stay in line for checking. The ticket is not too expensive. We prefer to follow the bus tour ride due to the weather is rainy on that day but it’s not our obstacles.
A Drop of rain fall slightly, whiles everyone enjoying the picturesque view. There are many interesting sight of mosque. Amongst them are miniatures of the Great Mosque of Xian [China],Kul Sharif[Russia],Kulyan Minaret[Uzbekistan],Quirawan [Tunisia],Mohamed Ali [Egypt],Sheik Lutfallah,[Iran]Abu Nasr Parsa, [Afghanistan],Aleppo Citadel,[Syria], Pattani Central[Thailand],and National Mosque in Malaysia etc. There are several mosques that are not mentioned. The interesting ones for me is a pure white mosque of Taj mahal, Madinah mosque: Madinah in full is Madinat Rasul Allah which means “City of the Prophet of Allah” ones feeling that come in mine is now am close to Prophet Muhammad, and the place that we can touch is Baitul  Muqqadiss  mosque in Palastin: It enshrines the Sacred Rock and commemorates the Prophet Muhammad's ascension to heavens to visit God.  One look at the Kudus Minar Mosque, I can image it like a coffee cake with sweet and good taste because of it style. While we have visit in each monument of mosque, the guide will tell us the histories and facts about these interesting places. Now it’s time for lunch, the delicious meals with Malay call “Nasi Ayam”. We have lunch together nearly the river. So, I could listened the sound of the water and feel soft breeze of the wind against my face while we are enjoying eating. Sitting near the Terengganu River, I could see the beautiful of real mosque. It’s the latest attractions building. It’s made from steel and glass to produce the crystal like image with so many facilities for the visitors. I don’t know that Malaysia has such a place. So! , Now it’s in front of me. We rushed off to see and don’t forget to take a photo. We prayed zuhur here. Then we continue for taking a photo. In front mosque there are playgrounds too. It’s really nice view with fountain. I missed taking some picture. We did not have time to enjoy the scenery. Some place is close because of it was repair by architect. I have plan that I should have trip with my family next round. Inshallah!! Visiting [TTI] during my trip to Terengganu is wonderful trip. It will keep in my memory.

Ruling on seeking Islamic knowledge

What is the ruling on seeking Islamic knowledge?
Seeking Islamic knowledge is fard kifaayah: if enough people undertake this duty, it becomes Sunnah for the rest of them. Seeking knowledge may become obligatory on each individual, i.e. fard ‘ayn, in the case of knowledge of an act of worship he wants to do or interaction he wants to engage in. In this case he has to know how to worship Allaah by this act of worship, or how to engage in this interaction. But knowledge other than this is fard kifaayah, so the seeker of knowledge should have the intention of undertaking something which is fard kifaayah, so that he may attain the reward for one who is doing something obligatory whilst he is seeking knowledge.
Undoubtedly seeking knowledge is one of the best of deeds; indeed it is a kind of jihaad for the sake of Allaah, especially in these modern times when bid’ahs have begun to appear in Muslim societies and are becoming widespread, and ignorance is common among those who issue fatwas without knowledge, and people have started to argue a great deal. These three issues all make it essential that young people be keen to seek knowledge.
 1 – Bid’ahs whose evil is apparent
2 – People who issue fatwas without knowledge
3 – Extensive arguing about issues which may be clear to the scholars but there are people who argue about them without knowledge.
For this reason we need scholars who have deep and extensive knowledge, who have an understanding of Islam, who are wise in advising the slaves of Allaah, because many people nowadays have theoretical knowledge, but they do not focus on finding the best means of reforming and educating people. They do not realize that if they issue a fatwa saying such and such, it becomes lead to greater evil, the extent of which no one knows except Allaa

Islamic advice to sisters graduating from university

I hope that you can give some advice to graduating women, those who have finished their university studies. What should they do after graduating and before marriage or until they get married?.
Praise be to Allaah.
There follows some advice to women who have finished their studies:
1. Every sister who has completed her studies should take stock of herself and the years that she spent in the university or elsewhere, and whatever occurred during them of sin or falling short in her duties towards Allah. She should repent sincerely to Allah, for repentance is required throughout life. No Muslim is free of sin or shortcomings in his or her duties towards Allah, so it is essential to repent from that. The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Every son of Adam commits sin, and the best of those who commit sin are those who repent.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi (2499); classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi.
If the sister was righteous during her studies, then she should praise Allah for saving her from the sins that others have fallen into, and she should continue to adhere to that path of righteousness and to her religion. Each of her days should be better than the day before, always.
2. Our advice to our sisters is not to be too keen to finish their studies or look for work, because unfortunately in most Muslim countries there is no work that befits women or is free of haraam elements.
Fatwas may be issued for a small number of sisters, in some specialities, allowing them to complete their studies or work, but that is after consulting scholars whose knowledge and religious commitment they trust, and in circumstances that apply only to them.
3. Sisters who have graduated should invest the time between graduation and marriage in calling people to Allah. Women need female daa‘iyahs who will encourage them to follow the path of righteousness. It saddens us to say that there is an urgent need for female daa‘iyahs and that those of our sisters who are undertaking this task are very few. There are many who are capable of helping and benefitting their fellow women, but we see that many of them are helpless and lazy.
Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“So when they forgot the remindings that had been given to them, We rescued those who forbade evil, but with a severe torment We seized those who did wrong because they used to rebel against Allaah’s Command (disobey Allaah)”
[al-A‘raaf 7:165].
Shaykh ‘Abd al-Rahmaan al-Sa‘di (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
This is the way of Allah with His slaves. If punishment befalls them, He saves those who enjoined what is good and forbade what is evil.
Tafseer al-Sa‘di, p. 306

O_O ....Wonderful Trip.....*_+

My trip experience in malaysia is a wonderful trip. After I have visited malaysia for many times but this trip is not  same as before. How? ! Because I have visit the city of Malaysia that is KL stand for Kuala Lumpur. Normarly, my family and I  visited at kelantan, kedah, etc. The purpose is that we have to visit our relative. For this time, I could see the wonderful of KL. There were many building and interesting places. The first impressions of Kuala Lumpur is I can get a great views of the towers [Petronas the twin towers]. There are 88 inhabitable floors. So, I got the great picture with the twin tower. When I enter in the tower , there are various shop for visiter to buy. The park behind the towers, were fountains and water features give the impression of coolness. It’s very popular among tourist. Apart from the local Malaysians, there are many from China, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Australia and a few Europeans. It's a very cosmopolitan city.
Sitting all the way was really tiring because we are only looking at the road, vehicle passing by and sometimes watching some movies in front of our seats are the only things we can do to pass time. Then, our journy were stop at the hotel. It was almost noon when we arrive. Now, we are hungry and tired. It was the normal mode of anybody from that long of a ride. But everybody is all pumped up. The tiredness disappeared when I know that now we are reaching hotel. When we arrived at the hotel,We need to check-in our hotel room. It’s look comfortable and nice. I'd slept overnight at the hotel.
The second day of our trip,we were in  challenging place “ Genting Highlands”. We bought cable car ticket ride to the theme park. Apparently there’s a passenger limit on each cable cars. When the cable car slides out from the terminal, my mind was restless. Looking out, I was immediately see the nature view with most beautiful picture. When I step out from cable car, I could touch the weather is so cool. In the park are two places, indoor and outdoor. I choose both of places. The most challenging is out door, we rode spider man. It’s really terrible for me but challenging. I was screaming until it stops. The word that out from my mouth is Allahuakbar. When I get down, I feel dizziness and vomit. Lucky for me it’s not too bad. Then we enjoying for took a photo in the beautiful places. It was wonderful trip in my life. Hopefully, I could have a nice trip again Inshallah.

Islamic view on celebrating the Valentine’s Day

The Islamic view on celebrating the Valentine’s Day?
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear questioner, thank you very much for having confidence in us, and we invoke Allah Almighty to enlighten our hearts all to accept the truth and to grant us success both in this world and on the Day of Judgement, Amen.

First of all, we’d like to shed light on the origin of this festival, known as "Valentine Day" or "Festival of Love":

The Festival of Love was one of the festivals of the pagan Romans, when paganism was the prevalent religion of the Romans more than seventeen centuries ago. In the pagan Roman concept, it was an expression of "spiritual love".

There were myths associated with this pagan festival of the Romans, which persisted with their Christian heirs. Among the most famous of these myths was the Roman belief that Romulus, the founder of Rome, was suckled one day by a she-wolf, which gave him strength and wisdom.

The Romans used to celebrate this event in mid-February each year with a big festival.

One of the rituals of this festival was the sacrifice of a dog and a goat. Two strong and muscular youths would daub the blood of the dog and goat onto their bodies, then they would wash the blood away with milk. After that there would be a great parade, with these two youths at its head, which would go about the streets. The two youths would have pieces of leather with which they would hit everyone who crossed their path. The Roman women would welcome these blows, because they believed that they could prevent or cure infertility.

The connection between Saint Valentine and this festival:

Saint Valentine is a name which is given to two of the ancient "martyrs" of the Christian Church. It was said that there were two of them, or that there was only one, who died in Rome as the result of the persecution of the Gothic leader Claudius, c. 296 CE. In 350 CE, a church was built in Rome on the site of the place where he died, to perpetuate his memory.

When the Romans embraced Christianity, they continued to celebrate the Feast of Love mentioned above, but they changed it from the pagan concept of "spiritual love" to another concept known as the "martyrs of love", represented by Saint Valentine who had advocated love and peace, for which cause he was martyred, according to their claims. It was also called the Feast of Lovers, and Saint Valentine was considered to be the patron saint of lovers.

One of their false beliefs connected with this festival was that the names of girls who had reached marriageable age would be written on small rolls of paper and placed in a dish on a table. Then the young men who wanted to get married would be called, and each of them would pick a piece of paper. He would put himself at the service of the girl whose name he had drawn for one year, so that they could find out about one another. Then they would get married, or they would repeat the same process again on the day of the festival in the following year.

The Christian clergy reacted against this tradition, which they considered to have a corrupting influence on the morals of young men and women. It was abolished in Italy, where it had been well-known, then it was revived in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when in some western countries there appeared shops which sold small books called “Valentine’s books”, which contained love poems, from which the one who wanted to send a greeting to his sweetheart could choose. They also contained suggestions for writing love letters.
The above quotation is excerpted, with slight modifications, from www.Islam-qa.com

As regards the Islamic stance on this festival, Dr. Su`ad Ibrahim Salih, professor of Islamic Jurisprudence (Fiqh) at Al-Azhar University, states the following:

Indeed, Islam is the religion of altruism, true love, and cooperation on that which is good and righteous. We implore Allah Almighty to gather us together under the umbrella of His All-encompassing Mercy, and to unite us together as one man. Allah Almighty says: (The believers are naught else than brothers. Therefore make peace between your brethren and observe your duty to Allah that haply ye may obtain mercy.) (Al-Hujurat 49: 10)

Focusing more on the question in point, I can say that there are forms of expressing love that are religiously acceptable, while there are others that are not religiously acceptable. Among the forms of love that are religiously acceptable are those that include the love for Prophets and Messengers. It stands to reason that the love for Allah, and His Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) should have the top priority over all other forms of love.

Islam does recognize happy occasions that bring people closer to one another, and add spice to their lives. However, Islam goes against blindly imitating the West regarding a special occasion such as Valentine’s Day. Hence, commemorating that special day known as the Valentine’s Day is an innovation or bid`ah that has no religious backing. Every innovation of that kind is rejected, as far as Islam is concerned. Islam requires all Muslims to love one another all over the whole year, and reducing the whole year to a single day is totally rejected.

Hence, we Muslims ought not to follow in the footsteps of such innovations and superstitions that are common in what is known as the Valentine’s Day. No doubt that there are many irreligious practices that occur on that day, and those practices are capable of dissuading people from the true meanings of love and altruism to the extent that the celebration is reduced to a moral decline.

Islam and the west between strength and weakness .....

Looking at the calamities faced by the Muslims in all places, I want to know what is the difference between the Islamic way of life and the life of wealth, progress and strength in the west, and between the rulings on women in both societies. I am asking because I am sad about the situation of the Muslims in those countries.
Praise be to Allaah.
Firstly:
The disasters and calamities that are befalling the Muslims are only happening because they have forsaken the laws of Allaah regarding themselves, their societies and their nations. They do not support (the cause of) Allaah so how will He support them?
When some of the Muslims disobeyed the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) in the Battle of Uhud, Allaah punished them with defeat, even though the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and the senior Sahaabah were among them. So what about the Muslims nowadays when they are disobeying Allaah night and day and transgressing His sacred limits, except for those on whom Allaah has mercy?
Secondly:
Although the Muslims are living through disasters and calamities, and are suffering a great deal, what the west is facing in its societies and in their personal situations is even worse, with regard to faith, security and the family, especially in matters pertaining to women.
If you look at recent statistics from western countries, you will see that they are more deserving of pity because of their situation. We will look at a few examples:
65% of female workers are faced with sexual harassment in the work place in some European countries.
18% of women in America have been raped or have been faced with attempted rape at some stage in their lives.
More than half of the women who are raped are under the age of 17.
Ihsaa’aat, Diraasaat, Arqaam, p. 140.
According to a phone survey in Canada, covering 12,300 women throughout Canada between February and June 1993:
Half of Canadian woman have been exposed to an incident of physical or sexual violence after the age of 16.
45% were attacked by men who were known to them.
23% of them were attacked by strangers.
23% were attacked with weapons as the result of marital disputes.
Ihsaa’aat, Diraasaat, Arqaam, p. 141
In America:
One million illegitimate children are born each year.
12 million children are homeless and living in unhealthy circumstances.
There are one million abortions each year in America.
In Britain:
25 million obscene phone calls were recorded in one year.
40 million children are homeless in Latin America.
The law in Sweden allows marriage of brothers and sisters.
Ihsaa’aat, Diraasaat, Arqaam, p. 150.
Thirdly:
We appreciate your pride in Islam, and your protective jealousy concerning the Muslims. We ask Allaah to give us and you strength.
And Allaah is the Source of strength.

Why do we read Quran, even if we can’t understand a single Arabic word?

Found on the interwebs.
Why do we read Quran, even if we can’t understand a single Arabic word???? This is a beautiful story.

An old American Muslim lived on a farm in the mountains of eastern Kentucky with his young grandson. Each morning Grandpa was up early sitting at the kitchen table reading his Quran. His grandson wanted to be just like him and tried to imitate him in every way he could.
One day the grandson asked, “Grandpa! I try to read the Quran just like you but I don’t understand it, and what I do understand I forget as soon as I close the book. What good does reading the Qur’an do?”
The Grandfather quietly turned from putting coal in the stove and replied, “Take this coal basket down to the river and bring me back a basket of water.
The boy did as he was told, but all the water leaked out before he got back to the house. The grandfather laughed and said, “You’ll have to move a little faster next time,” and sent him back to the river with the basket to try again. This time the boy ran faster, but again the basket was empty before he returned home. Out of breath, he told his grandfather that it was impossible to carry water in a basket, and he went to get a bucket instead.
The old man said, “I don’t want a bucket of water; I want a basket of water. You’re just aganot trying hard enough,” and he went out the door to watch the boy try in.

At this point, the boy knew it was impossible, but he wanted to show his grandfather that even if he ran as fast as he could, the water would leak out before he got back to the house. The boy again dipped the basket into river and ran hard, but when he reached his grandfather the basket was again empty. Out of breath, he said, “See Grandpa, it’s useless!”
“So you think it is useless?” The old man said, “Look at the basket.”

Th e boy looked at the basket and for the first time realized that the basket was different. It had been transformed from a dirty old coal basket and was now clean, inside and out.
Son, that’s what happens when you read the Qur’an. You might not understand or remember everything, but when you read it, you will be changed, inside and out. That is the work of Allah in our lives.”

*_* Look for your heart in three places

The word "heart" is one of the most commonly used motifs, metaphors, and symbols in human history. It is a term whose definition is broad enough to include the fierceness of strength and courage as well as the tenderness and vulnerability of intense emotion. Traditional science, however, has downplayed the heart as merely a monotonously contracting muscle, while the brain is touted as both the center and originator of intelligence and feeling.

In spite of this, the tendency to ascribe psychological sensitivities to that constantly beating organ continues to
haunt contemporary human thought. At the language level, the word "heart" remains a strong conveyer of emotion and meaning. If human beings are discouraged, they are disheartened; if stoic, heartless; if in the best state of energy and enthusiasm, hearty.

In the face of traditional science, why does the collective psyche of humanity continue to fixate upon this same intangible concept of the heart? Perhaps it is because, to this day, the stopping of the heartbeat signifies the coming of death. It might be ascribed to the way that the heart responds so readily to emotional signals, increasing or reducing pace in direct correlation to the human psychological state. Within human consciousness, the heart's meaning extends beyond that of a muscle; within Islam, the role of the heart cannot be understated.

The heart is mentioned repeatedly in the Qur'an. One of the mentioned du`a' (supplications) of Prophet Ibrahim, `alayhi salam (peace be upon him), beseeches to Allah, subhanahu wa ta`ala (the Exalted and Glorified): "Do not forsake me on the Day of Resurrection, a day where neither money nor children will benefit except whoever meets Allah with a sound heart" (26:87-89). Allah (swt) revealed this powerful supplication about the Day of Resurrection, for the judgment on the eternal fate of each soul is decided by Allah (swt) on that day, rendering a pure heart necessary for entering Paradise.

The Arabic term for the heart, qalb, has a very specific meaning. It refers to what defines the existence of the individual: one's personal center of faith. A most illustrious and beautiful chapter of the Qur'an, Surah Yaseen, is referred to as the heart of the Qur'an. According to the Prophet Muhammad, salla Allahu `alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings be upon him), the virtues of reciting this qalb, among others, include receiving benefits of the dunya (earthly life) and the removal of the dread of the akhirah (life after death).
Furthermore, worship of Allah (swt) is divided into four categories, two of which deal with the heart: its sayings and its actions. A true Mu'min (Believer) is said to possess a pure heart that is well-informed in the total belief of Allah (swt) and complete trust in Him-a heart that is true to its Maker (swt) in both its impulses and the carrying out of those impulses. The qalb was created to hold its Creator as its highest Authority, Love, and Loyalty. If the heart is dead, then spiritual (and, eventually, physical) problems would manifest themselves in the individual.

In purifying the heart, a Believer can rest assured that the best of examples is being followed: that of Prophet Muhammad (saws), the most virtuous of the creations of Allah (swt) and the most beloved to Allah (swt). Indeed, despite his perfection in the sight of Allah (swt), the Prophet's heart (saws) was not only cleansed by Angel Jibreel (Gabriel), but was also purified by his own strategies of worship.

One of the greatest interpreters of Shari`ah (Islamic law) of the fourteenth century, Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, was greatly concerned with matters of the qalb. According to him, `Abdullah ibn Mas`ood, radi Allahu `anhu (may Allah be pleased with him), one of the closest companions of the Prophet (saws), once presented a diagnostic by which a Believer may determine the state of the qalb. He said:
"Look for your heart in three places: when listening to the Qur'an, when seeking knowledge (of Allah) and when in privacy. If you cannot find it in these places, then ask Allah (swt) to bless you with a heart, for indeed you have no heart."
A soul with no heart can not even begin to work on increasing its level of submission to its Lord-the very foundation of its purity. A vital conductor of faith must be found and awakened within every loyal slave of Allah (swt). The following exploration of `Abdullah ibn Mas`ood's (ra) mentioned places transcends the mind and body and deals with a site precious to all human beings.
